Healthy Aging

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) increases NAD+ levels, which turns on a class of proteins called sirtuins that can increase cellular lifespan. Strategies aimed at maintenance of adequate NAD+ levels in the mitochondria (power houses) of every cell may be one key to healthy aging.


A class of proteins called sirtuins, SIRT1 and SIRT3 in particular, are central to NAD+’s effect on metabolism. In a famous animal study, mice were given the NAD+ precursor nicotinamide riboside (NR) before being fed an obesogenic diet. Feeding NR resulted in increased NAD+ levels in muscle, liver, and brown fat cells (the good fat that generates heat by burning calories) and increased SIRT1 and SIRT3 levels.

Cellular Energy

The energy currency used in all cells in the body is called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP transfers chemical energy throughout the cell and is continually being recycled. ATP production is highly dependent on the amount of NAD+ available. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is found naturally in the body and is a precursor to NAD+. It has also been shown that NAD+ levels can increase when nicotinamide riboside is taken orally.


As nerves degenerate, due to injury, illness, aging, or exposure to toxins, a class of enzymes referred to as PARPS spring into action to repair DNA. This process uses up important NAD+ reserves. Several studies have shown that increasing NAD+ levels prior to or at the time of injury can prevent nerve degeneration.* Niacin, niacinamide, and nicotinamide riboside (NR) were tested, and NR was the only one of the three that provided protection of the nerve from degeneration.
